An iPhone 4 that had been lost to the bottom of a lake since March 2015 was dredged up by a stranger, put in a bowl of rice and–believe it or not–successfully turned on! Michael Guntrum dropped his phone in March 2015 while ice fishing on Kyle Lake in Pennsylvania. Last month, Daniel Kalgren went exploring in the basin of the lake, which was emptied in September 2015 due to structural problems with its dam. “[I wanted] to find what people dropped off of boats,” Kalgren tells Buzzfeed. “[The iPhone] was the only thing I found that day…I took the phone home, cleaned it and put it in rice–just out of curiosity, to see if it would still work.” He was then able to contact Guntrum after looking up his number on the phone. Says Kalgren, “This adds to the reasons why I only buy Apple devices.
